As Microsoft‘s Bing rises in popularity, Computing finds out what end users need to know about the search engine

One feature of Bing is that it takes into account the experience a user has on a web site, according to Chambaz. He said that Bing assigns a quality score for each page that appears in its search engine.
“If people are clicking on a link and land on a web page, then realize it’s not what they want, click back and have a poor user experience, that shows the content doesn’t match the intentions of the consumer,” he said. “The algorithm can learn from that by observing that pattern.”

He said that the best advice is to be genuine to your business and focus on its core strengths and uniqueness, such as the focus of the business and its location.

“If you are a florist, focus on floristry. Use keywords that are relevant and make sure you have locally relevant information, so that if you’re a florist, you’re not competing against worldwide organizations if you are just based in Hammer-smith. Make sure the word Hammer-smith and florist are properly populated across your site,” Chambaz advised.

He added that the best web sites are built to address consumer needs and that content should be consumer-friendly, not only in terms of the website experience, but also in the words that are used.

As it stands today, no shift in search is more important or prevalent than social media. Every day, millions of people communicate with social media tools like Facebook and Twitter. Reaching these people can be a critical component of any successful online marketing campaign. However, every social media strategy needs to be more sophisticated than simply starting a Twitter page and posting your company’s latest specials.

Social media and SEO marketing programs can strengthen each other. A high-quality social media campaign that is interactive and engages audiences can improve search engine rankings on two fronts — both in organic listings and as a source of inbound links. At the same time, applying smart SEO practices to social media content — such as keyword-rich updates — will increase the reach and visibility of your social media campaign.

It is important to use your social profiles as a way to attract attention by making sure that the right keywords are highlighted within them. This way, when a user searches for your brand, business or industry, your profile will appear in results. A nice side effect is that the more results containing your brand, the less room for your competition. It’s also important to be active on your chosen social media sites. Along with making your own posts, build friends and followers by being involved in communities with similar interests. Social bookmarking tools like Digg and Delicious will help promote your own activities along with helping you share useful information with your followers.

Video and Feeds

Feeds have also become a valuable tool in the new SEO landscape. This includes RSS feeds with the latest company news, press releases, blog posts or social media updates. It can also include product feeds — another reason why it’s important that your products and shopping carts can be easily indexed by search engines.

A relatively new concept is video SEO. Since acquiring YouTube, Google presents many video results in regular searches, often on the first page. Applying SEO concepts to videos can not only increase their placement in various searches but also improve the overall ranking of an entire website.

Getting Personal, and Local

Search engines are constantly looking for ways to differentiate themselves from the competition. One way has been attempting to deliver individual users with as much personalized content as possible. Localized search results have become increasingly expected by users in recent years, as they seek information relevant to their specific geographic area. Even as a small business, it might make sense to have offices (or even phone numbers) in different parts of the country or world to help improve search results in localized searches.

Beyond localized searches, search engines are continually looking for ways to drill down searches with results as individualized as possible. The new Google Personalized Search is just one example of this. Not only are search engines taking factors such as location into account when delivering results, they are also considering previous search history and other sites users have visited in the past. The reality is that, in many cases, no two searches will produce exactly the same results.

Because of concepts like personalized searches, it’s important to feature customized content. Microsites that are targeted to specific areas of interest, demographics or geographic regions are one way to do this. You might build a microsite for teens, or city and state pages for different parts of the country. These sites also give places to post fresh content on a weekly or even daily basis — something that search engines like to see.

The bottom line is that basic SEO concepts are still critical, just not by themselves. In order for SEO campaigns to be truly effective they need to be paired with smart marketing campaigns that involve every aspect of a company’s online brand. As with any marketing campaign, it’s very important to think about your target audience when designing an SEO campaign and how and where you can most effectively reach them.

Yes we all think we know more than we do and what you learn here you probably
never considered before.

In real terms there are 3 major players in the Search Engine field.

1. Google

2. Yahoo

3. MSN

4. AND NOW BING

Outside of these 4 there are bit players with degrees of accuracy but they are not really large players and essentially for us are an irrelevance.

AOL has a search capability but it draws its search material directly from Google so they are considered essentially part of that search engine albeit a separate entity from it.

Ask.com is all but dead as a search engine. It does not even index pages anymore so is slowly rotting in cyberspace and will not survive much longer.

Now the first thing you have to consider before you try to get indexed and get to that coveted No.1 spot on page 1 of Google is how insignificant you and you business are to these three Monster companies.

They don’t give two nanoseconds of their time to consider you in any form. Their only criterion for them is to satisfy the customer who is making the search. You don’t warrant a thought.  The customer is their Money target and their satisfaction is paramount. So the second you step out of line is the second you go from No.1 to nowhere, not seen and basically dead.

So before you try and apply your pathetic mentality against these companies remember this, they have an army  and I do mean an army of professor grade PHD’s whose sole existence is to make sure that Customer 1 is satisfied. So do not try and pit your wits or your measly few bucks thinking that your killer method of manoeuvring will escape their attention. Cheaters never win and the end result for you will be pain and financial loss on a scale you cannot afford.

So now it’s actually more cost effective to ensure that our online working methods are ethical so we don’t risk a cataclysmic shutdown of our site because we have been accused of SPAM activity. Recovery from these accusations may not always be possible and the damage to our reputation is just not worth it in the short or long term.
Now a search engine determines our site content and relevance by using “crawlers” which are basically robots to index pages on the web. Their job is to search your page follow links on your page to see where the end and to check the page relevance in terms of the search term used by the client.

What a search engine does not do is index every single thing on your webpage, such as Flash video or PDF files or office files. The crawlers will not follow “nofollow” links or broken links. Instead thesearch engine indexes WORDS specifically words placed in particular places on your webpage. Such as the words that make up your page “Title tag” the Meta tags and then the H1 to H6 sub header title tags. Links are also important and they follow these to see where they end and add a Value for those to your quality score.

So what this means for you is that the SERP (search engine results page) that is displayed for a given search term will search its cache and the web, plus check your title, meta, H1 – H6 tags check the page for relevance
for content and follow all the internal and external links then deliver a result in around 0.66 of a second.  So your page is effectively ranked against all the others with similar attributes in relation to the search in
less time than it takes to actually say the word “Ranked”.

The SERP’s that are displayed for the three majors are all broadly similar in style.

Google will display around 3PPC (pay-per-click) listings at the top of their list which will be pink
shaded and distinct from the organic (natural) search traffic below that. On the right hand side of the page will be more PPC advertisements. Google also shows a vertical search list such as video’s and maps at the top of their SERP. It is not unusual to find Video clips interspersed within the organic search
material, which is a relativelly new development driven by demand from sites like YouTube and
other social media. However even if your video is at No.1 it is still at least 3 clicks away from your site.

Yahoo will display 2 or maybe 3 PPC advertisements at the top, with the organic stuff below and more PPC to the right side of the page. Yahoo’s PPC is shaded light Blue to distinguish it from the rest of the search material. Yahoo also shows alternative potential listing titles and the vertical search terms inside the page header.

MSN will display their PPC advertisements at the top organic below and to the Lower right and a related search list top right. PPC is also shaded blue. Again the vertical search forms part of the header for the SERP

So in summary, your site is insignificant in the great scheme, SEO matters because content matters and all three of the largest players all paly the same game and trying to outwit them is foolish.
